Rocky Mountain spotted fever
It was first investigated in Montana's Bitterroot Valley in the early 1900s, where Howard Ricketts identified the tick-borne organism that carries his name. Most American cases today are reported from states such as North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, well away from the mountains in the name.
