The entry

Dutch settlers named the northern Manhattan settlement Nieuw Haarlem in 1658 after Haarlem in North Holland, and the English kept a clipped spelling of it. Participants at the time spoke of the New Negro movement; the neighborhood label became the standard name only afterward.
