Plant breeders in Manitoba and Saskatchewan spent the 1960s and 1970s stripping erucic acid and bitter glucosinolates out of rapeseed. The Rapeseed Association of Canada coined canola for the result in 1978, from Canadian oil, low acid, partly to escape the word rape on a label. The name was registered as a trademark and has since gone generic.
