A blood red sulfide from the Nevada gold mine that gave its name to a whole style of ore deposit.

B. G. Weissberg described getchellite in 1965 from the Getchell mine, about 32 kilometers northeast of Golconda in Humboldt County, Nevada. Getchell is a Carlin type deposit, one of the sediment hosted Nevada goldfields where the gold is too fine to see. The mineral has since been found at Carlin itself and at the Zarehshuran gold deposit in northwestern Iran.
