Paris-Brest
The cycling race from Paris to Brest and back began in 1891, and the pastry is said to have been shaped like a wheel in its honor by a baker on the route, usually named as Louis Durand at Maisons-Laffitte around 1910. The race still runs every four years, while the pastry now turns up on menus with no interest in cycling at all.
