Alfred Descloizeaux and Alexis Damour described ottrelite in 1842 from Ottré near Vielsalm in the Belgian Ardennes, where it occurs in low grade metamorphic phyllite. The same beds yield coticule, the manganese garnet whetstone quarried there for centuries and still sold for sharpening razors. Ottré is a hamlet inside the municipality of Vielsalm, which is often given in its place.
