Norwegian forest cat
Norwegian farms kept a heavy coated skogkatt, or forest cat, for centuries, and an animal like it appears in Norse folk tales. Crossbreeding nearly ended the type during the Second World War, and Norwegian breeders started a formal program to preserve it. The Fédération Internationale Féline recognized the breed in 1977.
