Waldemar Christofer Brøgger named laurdalite in 1890 for Laurdal, now written Lardal, a valley north of Larvik in the Norwegian part of the Oslo rift. It is the feldspathoid bearing member of the Larvik plutonic complex, whose more famous rock is larvikite. The name is also spelled lardalite in modern Norwegian usage.
