Lautenthalite was described in 1994 from the Trogtal quarry near Lautenthal in the Upper Harz, a silver and lead district mined since the Middle Ages. It forms as a secondary crust where old sulfide ore has weathered. Type material is at the Institute for Mineralogy of the Ruhr University in Bochum.
