Jena glass
Otto Schott worked out borosilicate compositions at Jena with Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss, and the glassworks he founded in 1884 supplied thermometers and vessels that did not crack when heated. The American equivalent, Pyrex, followed the same chemistry a generation later.
