The entry

E. S. Larsen and E. T. Wherry proposed the name beidellite in 1925 for clay from Beidell, Colorado. When the Smithsonian material was re-examined, the Beidell specimen R4761 proved to be a mixture, so the working reference specimen is R4762 from the Black Jack mine in Idaho. Beidellite is now one of the standard end members used to classify swelling clays.
