A single small Alpine manganese mine produced a vanadate found nowhere else.

J. Brugger and P. Berlepsch described fianelite in American Mineralogist in 1996 from the Fianel mine in Val Ferrera, Graubunden. The type material is at the Natural History Museum in Basel. Val Ferrera's manganese deposits are metamorphosed sediments, which is why they carry vanadium rather than the usual Alpine ore suite.
