Grimselite was described in 1972 from a cable tunnel between Gerstenegg and Sommerloch in the Oberhasli, north of the Grimsel Pass in canton Bern. The tunnel cut a fissure in granite where uranium minerals had crystallized. Type material is at the University of Stuttgart.
