salitenoun · 1800
Well attestedNamed by the Brazilian statesman who also discovered lithium's mineral while working in Sweden.
José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva described salite in 1800 from the silver mine at Sala in Västmanland, during the years he spent studying mineralogy in northern Europe. He later returned to Brazil and became the central figure in its independence. The name, also spelled sahlite, is no longer a valid species.
