Well attestedIt was found by sawing open jade pebbles picked off a Japanese beach.
Hiroyuki Miyajima and colleagues described rengeite in 2001 from jadeitite of the Itoigawa and Ōmi district in Niigata Prefecture, in boulders from the Kotaki and Hime rivers and pebbles from the shore at Oyashirazu. It is named for Mount Renge and for the Renge metamorphic belt, the high pressure belt that produced the jade. Itoigawa jade has been worked in Japan since the Jōmon period.
