A. Kato described kawazulite in 1970 in the Geological Survey of Japan's Introduction to Japanese Minerals, from the Kawazu mine on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. The structure had already been worked out by Nakajima in 1963 for the synthetic Bi2Te3-xSex series. Type material is split between Tokyo, Paris and the Smithsonian.
