Komodo

The largest lizard on earth was a rumor science did not check until 1910.

Dutch colonial officials heard stories of a land crocodile on Komodo, and the animal was formally described in 1912 once specimens reached Java. Its entire range is a handful of islands in the Lesser Sundas, which is why one small island's name now covers the whole species.
