Well attestedNamed for a silver mine that had already been working for four centuries when the mineral was found in it.
Akira Kato described ikunolite in 1959 from a quartz vein at the Ikuno mine in Hyogo Prefecture. Ikuno had been mined for silver since the 1540s and became a model government mine in the Meiji period, run with French engineers. The species has since been found at the nearby Akenobe mine and as far away as Kingsgate in New South Wales.
