Satoshi Matsubara and colleagues described okayamalite in 1998 from the Fuka mine at Bicchu-cho in Okayama Prefecture, where boron-bearing fluids had worked over an aggregate of wollastonite and calcite. Fuka had already given its name to fukalite, so the new species was named for the prefecture instead. A second occurrence was later found in the Arendal district of southern Norway.
