A bed named for glamour that mostly means "we left the footboard off."

The term is recorded in American English from the late 1940s, when an upholstered headboard over a low open frame looked like film-star luxury. No documented Hollywood origin exists; the name borrows the movie town's shine much as Hollywood Regency furniture does.

Glasses and a ponytail are all it takes to be ugly in Hollywood.

The convention lets a film stage a makeover reveal without casting anyone the audience would actually find unappealing, and critics have named and mocked it since at least the 1990s. It is an informal label rather than an industry term, so its edges are loose.
