A. R. Kampf, P. J. Dunn and E. E. Foord described grandreefite, pseudograndreefite, laurelite and aravaipaite together in American Mineralogist in 1989, all from the Grand Reef mine in Graham County, Arizona. Laurelite takes its name from Laurel Canyon, the canyon the mine sits in, rather than from the mine like its three companions. Kampf and Foord returned in 1996 with a fifth species, calcioaravaipaite.
