Pete Dunn and coauthors described franklinphilite in 1992 from Franklin, a borough in Sussex County, New Jersey. The zinc deposit there and at neighboring Sterling Hill has produced more than three hundred mineral species, several dozen of them found nowhere else. The suffix philite was chosen to mark that devotion rather than to describe the chemistry.
