Sterlinghillite was described in 1981 from the Sterling Hill mine at Ogdensburg in Sussex County, New Jersey, the sister deposit to Franklin. Zinc mining there ended in 1986 and the workings reopened as the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. The ore is famous for fluorescing brilliantly under ultraviolet light.
