Well attestedA vanished sea left central Europe with its own calendar of geologic time, named after small Austrian and Hungarian towns.
The Paratethys, an inland sea that once stretched from Austria to central Asia, held fossil sequences that do not line up with the Mediterranean standard, so geologists built a parallel timescale from local reference sections. Eggenburgian comes from Eggenburg in Lower Austria, a walled town of about 3,500 people; its neighbors on the scale are the Egerian, Ottnangian and Karpatian, all named the same way.
