R. Quint described amstallite in 1987 in Neues Jahrbuch fur Mineralogie from Amstall, a locality in the Krems district of Lower Austria. Its formula carries a partial chloride site, unusual for a rock-forming aluminosilicate. Type material is split between the Institute of Mineralogy and Crystallography at Vienna University and the Natural History Museum in Vienna.
