Nueva Vizcaya
Governor General Luis Lardizábal created the province by order on 24 May 1839, and a royal decree confirmed it in 1841. The name honors Vizcaya, the Basque province on the Bay of Biscay, whose people were heavily represented in Spanish colonial administration. Spain had already used the name once before, for a Nueva Vizcaya in northern Mexico.
