Maine Coon
Farm cats in Maine developed heavy coats and broad snowshoe paws, and local folklore explained the bushy ringed tail by crossing them with raccoons, which cannot happen. The cats were fixtures at 19th-century New England shows, and Maine has since made the breed its official state cat.
