Dutch Shepherd
The Hollandse herdershond was a working farm dog of the Dutch countryside, and its breed standard was written in 1898. Brindle was fixed as the required color to keep the breed distinct from the German and Belgian shepherds. Dutch sheep farming collapsed and nearly took the breed with it; it survives mostly as a police and military dog.
