The entry

Railway workers exposed the shelter at Les Eyzies in the Dordogne in 1868, and Louis Lartet excavated the skeletons that carried the site's name into every textbook; cro is local dialect for a hollow or cave. Specialists now prefer early modern human, because the old label lumped together populations spread across tens of thousands of years.
