William Leonard Faber published On Carrollite, a new Cobalt Mineral in the American Journal of Science in 1852, describing material from the Patapsco mine in Carroll County, Maryland. The Maryland workings are long closed. Today the best carrollite crystals in the world come from the Katanga copper and cobalt mines, thousands of kilometers from the county on the label.
