Calydonian Hunt
Homer already refers to the hunt in book nine of the Iliad, and Ovid gives the fullest surviving account in the Metamorphoses. The list of hunters worked as a catalog of heroes that artists could paint, and it appears on the Francois Vase of about 570 BC. Calydon itself sat in Aetolia on the north shore of the Gulf of Patras, near the mouth of the Evenus.
