Barquillite was described in the European Journal of Mineralogy in 1999 from the Barquilla tin, germanium and cadmium deposit at Villar de la Yegua in Salamanca Province. It occurs as rosette-like aggregates of plates under 50 micrometers across. The name was taken from the village of Barquilla next to the workings rather than from the mine itself.
