The entry

Knitting for sale grew on the Aran Islands off Galway in the early 1900s, and the sweaters reached American shops after the 1940s. The claim that each family had a hereditary stitch so drowned fishermen could be identified traces to J. M. Synge's drama and later tourist copy, not to island records.
