Well attestedFrom a Bavarian Forest pegmatite mined for quartz, not for the phosphates that made it famous.
August Breithaupt named zwieselite in 1841 for its occurrence at the Hühnerkobel pegmatite at Rabenstein near Zwiesel in Lower Bavaria. The small quartz working there sits in the contact between mica granite and garnet gneiss and produced a celebrated suite of phosphate minerals. Zwiesel itself is better known today for glassmaking.
