Wales

The dish is a joke at Wales's expense that outlived the joke.

It began as Welsh rabbit, mocking a meal without meat. Rarebit is a later, politer respelling of the same phrase.

Corgi is Welsh too: cor plus ci, meaning dwarf dog.

The second half of the name is a Welsh word rather than an English description, so the breed name effectively says Welsh twice. The two varieties are named for Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire and were shown as a single breed in Britain until 1934.
