Vernazza

The grape and its name may come from opposite ends of the Mediterranean.

One etymology takes French grenache from Italian vernaccia and so from Vernazza in the Cinque Terre. Ampelographers, though, place the variety's origin in Aragon, where it is garnacha, and it reached France by way of Spanish Roussillon. The two accounts have never been reconciled, so the toponym behind the English word remains open.
