The system was once used across East Asia, but South Korea kept it in daily life long after Japan and China abandoned theirs, leaving Koreans juggling as many as three different ages at once. A law that took effect in June 2023 made international reckoning the standard for official and legal purposes. Under the old count, a baby born on 31 December turned two the next day.
