The coinage is credited to Martina Margetts, a sub-editor at Harpers and Queen who worked on the magazine's 1975 article, crossing Sloane Square in Chelsea with the Lone Ranger. Peter York and Ann Barr fixed the type in print with The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook in 1982, the year after Diana Spencer, its most famous specimen, married the Prince of Wales. The square is named for Sir Hans Sloane, whose collection became the founding holdings of the British Museum.
