The first mosasaur ever found in river sediment carries the name of a Roman province.

Pannoniasaurus inexpectatus was described in 2012 from bones in the Csehbánya Formation of western Hungary, inside the territory of the Roman province of Pannonia. Its species name means unexpected, because mosasaurs were sea reptiles and this one lived in fresh water. It reached about six meters in length.
