A university press's house style became a transatlantic identity badge.

The mark is named for Oxford University Press, whose style rules have long required it, and the press in turn carries the name of the city. Most American guides demand the comma and most British ones outside Oxford drop it, which turned a printing convention into a small cultural marker.
