An element that existed for four years, named after a university that took its name from a state.

Charles Baskerville announced in 1901, working at the University of North Carolina, that thorium was really a mixture of three elements. He named two of them carolinium and berzelium, the second for Jons Jakob Berzelius. R. J. Meyer and A. Gumperz could not reproduce the separation in 1905, and thorium was confirmed to be a single element.
