Seltzer is a worn-down spelling of Selters, a spring village in Hesse.

Naturally fizzy water from the springs at Niederselters was shipped across Europe in stoneware jugs, and Selterswasser became a generic term that English borrowed as seltzer. Once carbonation could be manufactured anywhere, the word outlived the trade that produced it.
