The mountain weather does the work that the mystery gets credit for.

The name was built on the model of the Bermuda Triangle and spread after the aviator Steve Fossett vanished over the Sierra Nevada in September 2007; his wreckage was found more than a year later. The region takes in high desert and the Sierra crest, where downdrafts and sudden weather changes are severe, and military aircraft have trained over it for decades. Counts of crashes there run into the thousands.
