Birmannoun · 1920s
Well attestedThe cat is named for a country it probably never came from.
The name is French birman, meaning Burmese, and the breed was established in France in the 1920s as the Sacre de Birmanie, the sacred cat of Burma. The story of temple cats brought from Burma has never been documented, and the breed's paperwork begins in France. The French line was nearly wiped out during the Second World War and was rebuilt by outcrossing to Persians and Siamese.
