Well attestedThe mineral is named for the hill that gave Montreal its name, and was found in a quarry across the same city.
A. C. Roberts and six co-authors described montroyalite in the Canadian Mineralogist in 1986 from the Francon quarry in Montreal. The quarry cut an alkaline sill of the Monteregian intrusions and produced a long list of rare strontium and barium carbonates before it closed. Type material went to the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa.
