One of very few natural iodides, from a German mercury hill mined since the Middle Ages.

Moschelite was described in 1989 from the Landsberg workings at Moschellandsberg near Obermoschel in Rhineland-Palatinate. The hill is a classic mercury deposit that also gave its name to moschellandsbergite, a silver mercury amalgam. Natural iodides are rare because iodine almost always stays in solution.
