Nessienoun · 1934
Well attestedThe nickname came out of a newspaper's children's drawing competition, months after the first modern sighting.
Modern interest began with a sighting reported in the Inverness Courier in 1933. The earliest known uses of Nessie date from January 1934, in the Glasgow Daily Record and Mail, which ran a competition inviting readers to draw the creature. The name is simply the loch's, Ness, with the Scottish pet-name ending -ie. Loch Ness holds more fresh water than every lake in England and Wales combined.
