The usability writer Theo Mandel used the term in his 1994 book on graphical interfaces, arguing that heavy color makes a screen look friendlier while pulling users off their task. Programmers call the same fault angry fruit salad. The allusion is to the massed neon of the Las Vegas casino strip.
