Kotlinnoun · 2011
Well attestedNamed after an island on purpose, because Java is an island too.
JetBrains unveiled Kotlin in July 2011 and named it after Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland, about twenty miles west of the company's Saint Petersburg office and the site of the naval town of Kronstadt. The choice deliberately echoed Java, itself named after the Indonesian island by way of coffee. Google made Kotlin an officially supported Android language in 2017 and the preferred one in 2019.
