One island's thornbill may be down to a few dozen birds in scraps of scrub.

The subspecies was described from King Island, between Tasmania and mainland Australia, where clearing has left it only fragments of wet forest. Surveys since 2000 have found so few birds that it ranks among the most endangered on the continent.
